6th Annual Exhibition of
Australian Species as Bonsai

 22 - 23 November, 2008

at the

Australian National  Botanic Garden

Acacia longifolia

The 6th Exhibition of Australian species as bonsai will be held at the Australian National Botanic Gardens (ANBG) from Saturday through Sunday, 22 - 23 November 2008.

These annual shows feature some of the diversity of species and styles being used by growers of Australian species as bonsai.  Some growers use Australian materials in a very traditional Japanese aesthetic of shape, proportion and artistic taste, while other artists explore the possibilities and meanings of styling their plants to evoke the excitement or wildness of trees and shrubs in the Australian bush.

The previous five exhibitions have drawn strong, positive responses from attendees. The location at ANBG means that we attract bonsai club members, others who grow bonsai and a wide diversity of people who know about bonsai but are not closely connected with it.  This includes a diversity of people from across the country and overseas as well who were ‘just visiting the gardens or Canberra’ and saw the signs.

Please will all members of APAB give consideration about how you might contribute.  Those within striking distance of Canberra can contribute trees. We have had many significant trees from many areas of NSW and even as far a field as Hobart.

For those living too far away to carry trees here, we have a display of photographs of trees. These have always been popular and allow a greater diversity of trees to be shown to the public. So if you have a photo, please send it to me (Study Group Leader). I’d prefer a good quality digital image (we’ll print it here at A4 size), sent by broadband or CD.  A good quality photo can be scanned here, or you can send a good quality A4 print yourself.  Please let me know as soon as possible whether you will have a tree coming or whether you will be sending a photo. Photos need to be here by 1 November. Trees need to arrive on Friday morning 21 November.  This is an excellent opportunity to showcase the quality and diversity possible in using native Australian species as bonsai.

Some examples of bonsai from these exhibitions are featured on this page.  A larger selection of images from the 2005 and 2006 exhibitions are available at: http://www.anbg.gov.au/bonsai/index.html.
