General Description:

Asteromyrtus is a genus of seven species native to northern Australia, New Guinea and Indonesia.  They were previously included in the genus Melaleuca.

Asteromyrtus brassii is a medium to large shrub or small tree to about 8 metres high.  The leaves are elongated oval in shape, about 60 mm long and 10-12 mm wide and aromatic with an aroma reminiscent of liniment.  Flowers occur in globular clusters giving a brush-like appearance and are borne on the older branches and trunk from late winter to early summer, They are deep red to pink and are followed by globular fruits about 20 mm in diameter.

This is an attractive plant for tropical and sub-tropical gardens.  It is grows well in most moist soils in a sunny or partially shaded location. Reliability in cooler, temperate climates is uncertain. The flowers are attractive to nectar-seeking birds.

Propagation can be carried out from seed which does not require any pre-treatment.  Cuttings of firm, current season’s growth can be expected to strike reliably.
